A cold sore outbreak occurs in 5 different stages. Cold sores typically last between 5-10 days. However, with the use of
proper treatment options you can limit the longevity of your outbreak.
The Prodome Stage - The dormant Herpes virus awakens and moves to the exterior of your face through nerve endings. During this stage you may feel an itching, burning, or tingling sensation on the affected area. The area then becomes red, and may swell up. This stage lasts anywhere from a couple of hours to 2 days.
The Blister Stage - Small white bumps known as vesicles or blisters will begin to form in groups on your lip. The vesicles contain viral fluid and will cause discomfort when touched.
The Weeping Stage - This is typically the most painful stage. The small white vesicles form together and burst. At this time it is important not to touch the ulcer as the virus can be spread to other parts of your lip or body easily.
The Scabbing Stage - During this stage the affected area will form a crusty yellow and brownish scab. As the scab shrinks it may crack, and bleed. You may feel itching, and discomfort when you move your lips. The affected area is still very contagious at this time.
The Healing Stage - At this point the scab should fall off, and you may experience some dry flaking, and swelling. The affected area should be nothing more than a pink or red spot. This spot may stay for as long as a few weeks.
